From Location-Bound Event to Scalable Participation

Comic-Con is an annual, high-density fan event held in San Diego, California. While attendance is limited to those who can be there in person, simply replicating the event in real time preserves format, not meaning.

When identity is clear, scale strengthens relevance rather than weakening it.

The strategic discipline is this: expand access in ways that reinforce the core experience, not replace it.

The Result

DC Con Away from Con expanded the reach of Comic-Con beyond its physical footprint while preserving its cultural equity.

What had historically been a geographically concentrated event became a scalable brand platform. Fans who would never set foot in San Diego were able to participate in real time, shifting from passive observers to active contributors.

The initiative extended engagement across digital channels, increased social participation, and reinforced DC’s position as a brand that understands and prioritizes its fandom.

Most importantly, it proved that the power of Comic-Con was not just the venue. It was the shared identity. And that identity could scale without dilution.

The approach

The reframe was simple and specific: stop thinking about what fans were missing and start thinking about what they needed to feel present.
The idea I developed was Con Away from Con, a curated, near real-time content delivery system designed to simulate the experience of being at ComicCon as it happened. Not a recap. Not a livestream. A parallel experience built for the fans who were not in the room.
Content was organized into defined categories including DC University, We Can Be Heroes, 5.2 Questions, and Character Spotlights, giving fans a structured way to move through the event on their own terms. The curation was deliberate. The pacing matched the rhythm of the live event.
The result was that fans posted about Con Away from Con in real time, alongside fans who were physically present. The boundary between being there and not being there collapsed.

the core tension

DC faced a structural contradiction. Comic-Con had always been about physical density: crowded halls, shared anticipation, collective reaction. Remove the gathering and you remove the energy that defines the event.

Fans still wanted connection and community, yet attendance in San Diego had always been limited to a fraction of the audience.

Recreate the convention digitally and you amplify what is missing: proximity, noise, scale, spectacle. Do nothing and the brand disappears from the cultural moment entirely.

The tension was between scale and intimacy, spectacle and belonging.


 

The Disconnect

DC Comics has one of the most passionate fan bases in the world. ComicCon is their moment, the annual gathering where narrative, character, and community converge at scale.

Most fans never get there. Geography, cost, and capacity mean that the overwhelming majority of DC’s global audience experiences ComicCon from the outside, watching others participate in something they care deeply about.

The default response would have been to livestream panels or post recap content after the fact. That approach preserves format but not feeling. It tells fans what happened rather than making them part of it.
